Total Lunar Eclipse

Postby @weather_wa » Mon Jun 13, 2011 5:28 am

As I mentioned in the June weather thread, there will be a Total Lunar Eclipse this week. The Eclipse will start at 11:23pm on Wednesday night and reach Totality at 4:12am on Thursday morning and will be a rare "Central Eclipse" which is relatively rare where the moon passes in front of the centre of the Earth's shadow and will be the Darkest lunar eclipse of this century.

But the forecast says showers with the risk of a possible storm for Wednesday and showers are being forecasted for Thursday so looks like we might not be able to get to see this eclipse. Image

There will be another Lunar Eclipse on December 10 that will be visible here in Australia.

The Eclipse is on tonight/early tomorrow morning.

Clear skies at the moment, so hopefully we will be able to get to see the eclipse tonight.

Oooh, I might even wake up to see that if it's clear. Lunar eclipses look awesome.

It's overcast outside now and totality is in about 10 mins, doesn't look like we will be able to see the eclipse. Image

The cloud just cleared for about a minute and I got a glimpse of the eclipse, still mostly red but I can already see the it starting to go back to normal.

I did see the moon after 5am when the cloud started to clear, but I didn't get to see it at totality because of the heavy cloud and rain at my place.

Thought some might be interested to know that the Total Lunar Eclipse is on this Saturday the 10th of December.

Starts at 7:34pm and will last for almost 5 hours  The moon will be in complete shadow at 10:06pm with the eclipse finishing at 12:18am Sunday

Forecast for Saturday/Sunday are showing as partly cloudy, so lets hope the clouds stay away and we can get a clear view :-bd

Cloud could spoil the lunar eclipse:

Late on Saturday Australia will be treated to a total lunar eclipse, however significant cloud cover is likely to spoil the party for the major cities in the country's east.

The eclipse will start at at 11:46pm AEDST, with the peak of the total eclipse occurring at 1:32am on Sunday morning. The moon will be totally eclipsed for 51 minutes and be back to its normal state by 3:18am.

With a lingering trough over QLD, much of the state's coast is likely to be shrouded in cloud. Brisbane will be no exception, however the trend should be for a slight decrease in cloud cover as the eclipse starts.

In Sydney, you will have to be lucky to catch a glimpse of the eclipse with cloud streaming in the from the west. The cloud cover should increase just after midnight.

For Melbourne a cold front will push through late this evening and into Sunday morning. While this may be a welcome relief for some after the recent heat, it will bring an increase in cloud and showers dampening the hopes of those waiting up to see the lunar phenomenon.

If you don't catch a glimpse of it this time around the next total eclipse will be in April 2014.

Nice that WeatherZone didn't mention what viewing will be like in WA or SA or NT or Tassie.
