Mercury plummets in southeast Queensland:

A near stationary trough has been causing heavy rain and storm across much of Queensland in the last couple of days. Cloud and showers kept maximums down during the day, whilst clearing by night and allowing temperatures to plummet throughout southeastern Queensland.

Brisbane was drenched on Monday night with 57mm in only 24 hours. With a December total of 327mm, they are now having their wettest December since 2004.

After the heavy rain, Brisbane had a clear night and started this morning with a chilly 15 degrees, five below average and their coldest December night in at least eight years.

Brisbane Airport was even cooler with a six-below average minimum of 13 degrees, which is their lowest in at least six years for December.

The cold air wasn't limited to the southeast this morning. Further west, Thargomindah recorded a fresh 15 degrees, nine below average and the Maranoa had its coldest morning since records began 12 years ago.
