Tropical Cyclone ATU Februrary 19 2011
Tropical Cyclone Warning Number 7 for Penama, Malampa and Shefa Provinces.
Tropical Cyclone Warning Number 7 issued by the Vanuatu Meteorological Service,
Port Vila at 9:31pm VUT Saturday 19 February 2011 for Penama, Malampa and Shefa provinces.
At 8:00pm local time, Tropical Cyclone Atu was located near
16.5 degrees South 169.0 degrees East, square letter H, number 6 (H, 6) of
the Vanuatu tropical cyclone tracking map. This is about 90 KM east northeast of Epi
and 140 KM north northeast of Efate. The Tropical Cyclone Atu is slow moving.
The central pressure of the system is estimated at 992 hPa. Winds close
to the centre estimated at 75 KM/HR (40 knots), possibly increasing
to 95KM/HR (50 knots) in the next 6 hours. The system is forecast
to be at 17.3 degrees South 169.0 degrees East within the next 06 to 12 hours.
Damaging Gale force winds of 75KM/HR, gusting to 105KM/HR is expected to be
affecting Penama, Malampa and Shefa provinces tonight and early tomorrow. Damaging gale
winds of similar strength will extend to Tafea province in the
next 24 to 48 hours.

Rough to very rough seas with heavy swells expected. Heavy rainfall and
flooding, including coastal flooding is expected over the northern and central
islands of Vanuatu. The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) advises
people that Red Alert has been issued for Penama, Malampa, Shefa provinces while
yellow Alert is issued for Tafea province. For action on this
alert call the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) on 24686 or 7771188.
The Vanuatu Meteorological Service will issue the next warning on the system
at 12:00am. People over Penama, Malampa, Shefa and Tafea
provinces are advised to continue to listen to all Radio Outlets to obtain the latest
information on this system. This warning and the Forecast Track
map are available on VMS's website http://www.meteo.gov.vu.
