This situation is pretty horrible. On one hand it is proving to provide seasoned chasers with experiences of a life time. On the other it is taking the lives of unwilling participants in what is turning out to be an extraordinary series of events. :(

There are reports of around 500 people in red cross shelters. Must be many more now homeless and still not in one of those shelters.

Tornadoes rip across the US, leaving at least 45 dead

AT least 45 people have been killed as a powerful storm whipped up tornadoes in its third day across parts of the southern, central and eastern United States, local media reported.

The tornadoes left a trail of destruction in North Carolina yesterday, levelling homes and businesses and knocking out power, the NBC television network reported today.

The fast-moving storm toppled trees and power lines, tore roofs off houses and scattered tractor-trailers across highways.

Some two dozen tornadoes were reported in the southern states of Mississippi and Alabama on Friday, a day after 15 twisters struck in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas, the National Weather Service said.

Violent weather also hit Arkansas and Georgia on Friday, US news reports said.
Particularly hard-hit was the North Carolina capital city of Raleigh, where dozens of homes destroyed.

Officials also reported multiple fatalities and widespread power outages throughout much of the state.

The violent weather system began late on Thursday in Oklahoma, and left a trail of death and destruction as it travelled on Friday and Saturday through several states.

Among seven people killed in Alabama were mother and her two children, who were sheltering inside their double-wide trailer when it was ripped from its foundation and thrown hundreds of metres, landing on its roof, disaster officials said.

The potent storm had made its way into the Atlantic Ocean by early yesterday, meteorologists with the National Storm Prediction Center said.

Pretty crazy for the central east coast states to get an outbreak like this. early start to the season, well more so, early outbreak.
I remember visiting some places esp. Raleigh back in 2000.
