Postby Champagne Supernova » Sat Mar 31, 2012 5:19 pm

What are your favourite/ most memorable events.

Delete or move if needed.

Mine are:

May 2003(Can't remember the exact date) - A shed blew into my classroom at school.
16 May 2005 - Saw quite a bit of damage not far from where I lived at the time.
February 2007 - Several very close lightning strikes.
22 March 2010 - Probably the strongest lasting wind speeds I've experienced and very heavy rain aaswell.
28 February 2011 - Very hot and humid day ended with a spectacular storm that looked like it was going to miss me(but didn't) I also saw a transformer blow up after the storm passed.
6 December 2011 - Rain and lightning almost all day.

Nah, we can keep this thread where it is. :)

Mine are:

August 2, 2000 - insane winter storm caused widespread damage across Albany and the south coast with 4 tornadoes reported at Gnowangerup.

Can't remember the date - severe thunderstorms about 10 years ago. The most active lightning storm I have ever seen. To this date the only storm that came close to matching the amount of lightning that one produced was the storms in March 2010.

Can't remember the date - massive storms over Oyster Habour. I remember that it was still 30C at midnight (a rare thing for Albany), it was hot, still and humid. The lightning show was epic.

October 28th, 2008 - severe thunderstorms over much of the state, I remember the flash flooding in Albany. We got 60mm+ if I remember rightly.

November 20th, 2008 - biggest flooding event in Albany on record. 114mm in 24 hours.

Not sure of the date - afternoon severe thunderstorm in Albany, wasn't warned by the BoM but it brought 2.5cm - 3.5cm hailstones to Albany, the largest hail I have ever seen here.

March 16 - 17, 2010 - one of the best lightning shows I have ever witnessed. Insanely close strikes. The storms were going over Albany for 6 hours. I remember the date, because I joined the WAWG the day afterwards.

March 23, 2010 - Severe thunderstorms in Albany, following the big hailstorm in Perth. We missed out on the 22nd because the cap was too strong due to lack of heating and thick high cloud.

December 27 2004

Huge afternoon storm rolled in after a very hot day (I think it got up into the 40's) lots of thunder and lightning so I grabbed my camera and went outside to see if I could get any photos of the lightning, when I looked up I saw the biggest and best Mammatus clouds I've ever seen!

I remember we had a storm in either May or June 2005 where the next door neighbours gazebo ended up getting picked up by the wind and landing in our backyard and when I came home it looked like a UFO had landed in my backyard and was a huge surprise! LOL

The Summer of 2006-2007 saw allot of storms!

I remember going fishing and nearly every Friday night we got a late afternoon/early evening thunderstorm! I think it was Australia Day 2007 when we had thunderstorms, Comet McNaught and the fireworks all at the same time!

August 1 2008

I was invited down to a breakfast radio broadcast breakfast and competition drawing down at Fremantle. We had some heavy rain and strong winds that morning, and just after sunrise the storm had cleared for about 10 minutes and the sun came out and I saw a rainbow starting to form off the coast, luckily I brought my camera along, so I went outside onto a balcony at the restaurant where the function was being held and I started to take some photos of the rainbow.

As the sun started getting higher it started getting brighter which caused the rainbow to become larger and much brighter and allot larger, so large it spanned from South Mole lighthouse all way across the bay to the marina:

It was by far the biggest and brightest rainbow I've ever seen/photographed:

May 31st 2009

We had a late afternoon/early evening storm with allot of lightning off the coast, I started off down at Cottesloe beach around sunset but didn't have much luck, so I headed down to North Mole in Fremantle and set up at the lighthouse and watched the storms for a few hours off the coast.

27th to 29th Of June 2009

We had a wild weekend of storms and strong winds, I remember going out and taking photos on all three of those days and coming home absolutely soaked LOL

I remember on the Monday (29th) there was some early morning thunderstorms just before sunrise, so I went down to the City to try and get some lightning photos over the City, but by time I got down to South Perth, the storms had moved South, so I went over to the Old Swan Brewery but didn't manage to get any lightning photos because the sun had started to come up so I stayed and took some photos of the city instead. I do remember seeing allot of green lightning from this storm!

http://www.redbubble.com/people/eos20/w ... -the-storm

http://www.redbubble.com/people/eos20/w ... -the-storm

Then around 7am the next storm rolled in and caused chaos to the morning commute from what I recall, I was still at the Swan brewery as the storm rolled in from the coast:

http://www.redbubble.com/people/eos20/w ... wery-perth

and then it started to pour down with rain and the wind got really strong, I nearly got blown off the jetty by a very strong wind gust!
I got absolutely drenched and I remember that one of the radio stations were broadcasting from the brewery that morning, and I from what I heard they did mention the guy with the camera getting drenched! LOL

When I eventually got back to my car I was soaked! I started driving down Stirling Hwy and noticed that the storm surge at the Crawley Edge Boatshed, at first I wasn't going to stop, but I ended up going down to Crawley and took a few photos from there, but I ended up heading back and spend about a hour shooting at the boatshed until the storm had moved further East and the sun started to come out.

That ended up being a great weekend, just a shame I didn't end up getting any lightning photos.

March 22 2010

What A storm! We all know all about that one, so I don't need to go into to much detail.

January 29 2011

That large afternoon storm that caused all that damage out in Toodyay and Northam etc.

December 12 2011

Nice afternoon storm with a few roll clouds around the metro area (I remember stormgirl got some great shots down along the coast) I went the front of my place to see where the storm was and I saw a roll cloud off in the distance, so I quickly jumped into the car and sped off to get a few shots.

I remember there was some good rain shafts earlier that afternoon too.

January 4 2012

I remember the early morning thunderstorms that woke everyone up! LOL It also just happened to have been my birthday! What a great gift!

January 20 2012

What a night that was! We were all saying how much of a fizzer of a day it was and everyone went to bed, then around midnight there was the sound of faint rumbles, then a few flashes, then a few more, then a few more people came back onto the forums and were all watching the radar in anticipation of a storm, what we didn't know was it would turn out to be one of the best storms we've had in a long long time!

I remember watching the lightning from the front of my house but not being able to get any decent shots because of all the houses and street lights, so around 2am I decided to head off to a vacant housing estate/semi rural area near my place to get away from the street lights and get a clear view, I was only planning on staying for a bit, when I got there I was greeted to probably the best lightning show I've ever seen! It was non stop lightning with some of the most spectacular lightning I've ever seen!

http://www.redbubble.com/people/eos20/w ... nd-weather

http://www.redbubble.com/people/eos20/w ... nd-weather

I ended up shooting non stop till about 5:30am when the sun had come up and my camera ran out of battery. The storms didn't stop though, and continued till around midday from what I recall. That was a truly memorable storm!

Some more for me.

June 2008 - Storms around Perth that morning. I went to Collie and on the way drove through some of the heaviest rain I've ever seen and it lasted about 5 mins.

29 January 2011 - Very Hot and humid then cooled down by a short-lived storm that also caused major damage east of Perth.

21 March 2011 - Great lightning from a severe storm east of Perth that I think caused damage in some areas.

12 December 2011 - Intense storms all evening with some great lightning.

31 December 2011 - Amazing lightning for about half an hour.

20 January 2012 - Missed the best lightning, but still an eventful morning.

26 January 2012 - Awesome lightning from a storm that wasn't even forecast to happen.

Well being slammed against a fence by a tornado in 2002 would be my most memorable weather event. (Yes, in Perth.)

I recall a nice severe cell hitting in 2006. Lots and lots of flangs hitting everywhere and pebble sized hail driving into cars and buildings in Mundaring.

Saw a massive cell in 2010, March 22. I don't think Perth will get another one of those for a very long time.

Jan 2011, now that one was spectacular. Had a friend in York, they said that they thought it was a bushfire so they were opening gates for the goats and other livestock. Turns out it was only a massive sandstorm kicked up by a fast moving cell.

And the next favourite would be Jan 04 2012. That was epic. And the bushfire made planespotting that day awesome.

Hmm back in the 1990's, can't remember the exact year. There was alot of lightning in the marg's area and it was late at night. All of a sudden this huge boom of lightning came down. Honestly it sounded like a bomb going off, found out the next day that it stuck a huge tree down at the end of street in a nearby open paddock where the margaret river drive in used to be

The lightning exploded the tree right down the middle of it

Feb 1975 Severe Tropical Cyclone Trixie. Cat 5 as the eye wall went over Dampier. My first cyclone and the reason I love weather so much.

Summer 97 ish I was living in Kelmscott. There was an awesome storm that just sat over us for hours.

98 ish (don't even remember what time of year it was but still living in Kelmscott) localized hail storm and very strong winds that left ice banked up in my friends carport that was still there til about lunch time the following day.

Winter 2002 (I think) and could be the one that Pete was unsure of. Big hail storm came through in the afternoon. The temp dropped from about 13 down to 2 in the space of half an hour or so. i was living in Mt Barker then and had to almost skate down the hill to catch the bus to Albany. The wind was so cold it stung.

May 2005 Tornado trashes downtown Bunbury. I was in Donnybrook for that. We didn't get tornado but the storm was still pretty ferocious. I was standing on my verandah at about 6 - 6.30 am getting this very eerie feeling. It turns out that was when the tornado struck.

The 2010 storm, I had just got back from walking home after school that day, as I walked into the house there was this big bang and flash and I turned around and saw that my neighbours tree had caught on fire. That was one scary storm... I don't remember many storms that you guys have posted, but they sound pretty cool!
