be useful fullstop, should just be the standard, Australia a first world country? can see why we are falling behind the times.. i emailed them asking why there isnt a high res being put in.. and if there going to update the software avalible to the public.. radar maps etc how we look at them.. storm elevation wind speed direction rotation, humidity temps should all be layers on the radar maps.. oo and BOM should get a lightning strike map

I'd be happy to see a better radar network. Imagine if they had a doppler in say Merridan to see what goes on with summer storms so much better and provide better warnings for agriculturists. A radar on the cape down on the SW corner.

The coverage and forward warning for severe weather would be exceptional in winter and with the SW becoming the major focus of urban population over the next 30 years or so it would be good. Then again this is from a Government Dept that has the same funding as an episode of Home and Away

Merredin or Cunderdin would be good, it rains half the time here and its not on the radar. This summer i would have counted in the near double digits of anvils and thunderstorms behind Northam and they were all big (bet ya half were severe, alot of warnings). One of them caused the tornado in Training this year, radar just shows light green all the time for those storms in the central and eastern wheatbelt......

EDIT- just had a shower go through, no radar image showing it existed?

Maybe because we are always windy and it always blows onshore or offshore so a heap of coin to work out wind strength and direction possibly won't help?

It seems to me that new Perth Radar is a project that will be completed tomorrow. Everyone knows that tomorrow never comes.

Seems we dont need one at the moment anyway, i mean its not like we are getting any rain? and isn't it winter? People tell me we need a doppler for our 'winter storms', not this year   im still waiting for rain.

New Perth Radar at Serpentine - available soon!

BoM 2009-2010 severe weather summary wrote:A new radar has recently been installed at Serpentine south of Perth, and will become the official Perth radar replacing the existing one at West Perth. This exciting development will provide more detailed information to forecasters and end-users. This new radar has a greater resolution and sensitivity when detecting rainfall, something which users should be wary of as it will display rainfall as being more intense then the current Perth radar suggests. This is evident in the images below of the 22 March hailstorm. The rainfall intensity at Serpentine (right) correctly shows the dark red very intense rain and large hail in Perth's western suburbs at the same time the Perth radar (left) showed rainfall intensity in the 'orange' range. With the improved sensitivity this new radar will also provide greater coverage and being south of Perth will improve the coverage to the south to Busselton/Margaret River. This will be very useful for assessing approaching cold fronts enabling earlier detection of severe storms. Following some further testing, this new radar is expected to be commissioned and fully operational within the next month.

Figures 3 and 4 - Images of 22 March hailstorm from the Perth radar (left) and the Serpentine radar (right), taken at 3:50pm WST and 3:53pm WST respectively.

A familiar call there ;) Check the two pics of the radar loop. How many times do we say that happens  Cheeky buggers had it working while the storm was in full swing :)
