Loads of moisture to the north of Perth.
A pocket of dry air ahead of the south tracking storm

Is that cell that just went through Toodyay showing signs of rotation on radar or is it just me? Latest frame gives it a black core also. 11.40am.

Okay.. chase report!

I woke up at 4am to a cluster of elevated cells moving in from the N/NW. I set up outside my window and shot from there, nabbing a few keepers. (This being one of them)

After assessing the morning model run, I caught up with Brayden and we left Perth around 9am. We were torn over which area to target, as I was sure the point of iniation for lower based storms would be further north, but Brayden suggested we head into the Wagin area and intercept them as they came down.

We headed southeast, arriving in Brookton around 11am. By then, convection had already started and cells were starting to pop up on radar. We decided to head north towards Beverly as there were decent cells on radar building northwest of Toodyay. The first potentially severe cell of the day popped, displaying rotation and a red core on radar. We headed north to York to intercept it as came down on the town.

The structure was incredible. Linear striations and defined greenage.

Image

By then we were sure it was a supercell and we tracked it south toward Beverly. The cell displayed a corkscrew updraft with a lowering foot under the base.
Image

The storm encountered unfavourable shear and began to decay. To our east, massive cells were exploding upwards A-Bomb style.

Image

The storm rapidly developed and I suggested to head southeast toward Corrigin as more cells were heading down from the north. This is the sight we saw as we drove over the hill west of Corrigin.
Image

The flang fest was crazy. Constant pulsing CG's all around us. We took shelter at one of the fuel depots in Corrigin. The leading edge of the storm dumped hail 1 - 2cm large over east Corrigin. We waited until it had passed and then tracked east/northeast, hoping to catch the convergence line that storms were exploding on.
We got to Merriden about 8:30pm, but storms had passed us well out to Southern Cross by then. We grabbed pizza and headed home.

Perthnow reported that a tornado went through Gingin

Not entirely improbable given the direction of the storm that something ended up near Toodyay I reckon.

The colour was very strong. Ambient light was very reflective of the ice in the cloud.
Interesting to see the same colours come through as was seen in Perth's north.
