Re: Outflow October 2014

Me and Tom met up at 10:30 and headed south. Our target goal was to be at Williams by mid-day and take it from there. We got into Williams and observed small towers to our northeast. We met up with Paul Natale (bloody nice bloke) and Grahame Keaher at Williams to check conditions. Structure appeared fairly weak initially, but convection was bubbling away everywhere and we decided to head further southeast toward Kojonup.

The first storm of the day went up around 1ish, while things to our east and north were building rapidly. We chased this cell for a while as it was producing some killer crawlers. Managed to get a daytime lightning photo.

We headed further south to Kojonup, getting hammered with flangs by a cell our east which was rapidly becoming organized. Updraft strengths were insane, it was like watching a timelapse. Within 20 minutes the storm had a fully matured complete with a massive anvil.

Image

We waited for the core to pass as Tom wasn't keen on corepunching a storm with potentially golf-ball sized hail in it, as we'd seen reports coming out of the southwest.
Driving into it's wake, we found hail around 3cm in diameter in the grass. Trees had been stripped and there was flooding on the roads to Katanning.
We followed the cell southeast toward sunset in the hope of getting some decent lightning photos.

The convergence line was moving east after sunset so we called it a day and headed back to Perth.

Amazing pics guys!

I sat and watched the Donnybrook cell slip right past us. I could even hear the thunder but nothing but a great view for us!

Latest model run on BSCH http://forecasts.bsch.com.au/stormcast. ... :null:0#sc shows that it looks like the Eastern Wheatbelt could be in for another round of storms on Wednesday 29 October.

Wow! Stunning photograph. However long you had to wait to take it, or how far to drive? Worth every minute.

Ok it's a bit old news but thought I'd chuck it in here. Just got back from a wedding at the Yabby farm at Kukerin on Saturday and there was still water over the road in a couple of places. One of the guys there said they had 2 feet of water through their sheds the previous Saturday (19th) because they'd had 130mm and heard reports of up to 150mm around the place that day. Worst flood he'd experienced there.

Just putting that there for the records...please move, Fu, if necessary.
