Postby Fu Manchu » Sun Jun 01, 2014 10:08 pm

Not only is today the start of winter in WA, June also marks the start to one of 6 local SW seasons, Makuru

Seasonal outlook for next three months

Also we seem to be lacking some serious storms so can we involve the spirit of SpongeBob Thunderpants?

Fog at Perth Airport, vis around 100m below. Pic: looking south towards International Terminal (ATC Tower). The joys of nightshift BOM observing :)

Jetstream June works for me - nicely chosen.
Did the fog come down around midnight 1am? I thought it was raining, as I could hear the drip, drip, dripping onto the garage roof most of the night from the trees - obviously moisture from the fog collecting on the leaves. Guess I shut the airport down for a bit too?

Yeah pretty much 12-1am, was getting misty around 11pm. Deff. no landings once the fog was in, a couple of take off's though. There's a prob 30 on the TAF for fog again tonight 10pm-9am. So might be another good nightshift ;)

Due to a lack of interest real winter weather has been cancelled for at least a week. :(( :(( :(( :((

I have to admit to being a bit alarmed at the 24 for Friday, but on the other hand I'm going to welcome this break in the weather. I bought a new telescope last week and I'm keen to give it a run to see how it performs. May was a near-total washout so I've had a good rest and I'm ready to go again.

Ok I'm curious what did you get? I've been online for the past month drooling :p over 12" Dobsonians! Maybe one day.

want a small ( 4 -5 in ) Newtonian telescope on an equatorial mount with motor
mostly for sticking a camera on the back and taking star shots

biggest telescope I peered thru was a 16 in cassegrain at Auckland observatory
was a member of the club

a 10" Richy-Cretien for video use. Looks like it needs a spacer to reach focus after a first attempt to use it tonight, will have another look in daylight tomorrow.

I used to dream about a 20" dob, but these days its a 14" cassegrain on a permanent mount in its own observatory. How things change!

Just to bring it back on topic - I'm hoping the clouds stay away another 30 hours or so... :ympray:

You could get a Vixen Polarie star tracker or an iOptron Skytracker. They do away with the need for a scope and track for about an hour. The Vixen Polarie is considered better. The next thing to get is one of the newer DLSRs that you push the ISO up to silly power of 64000 or something. Then you'll be cooking! No need for a scope at all.

Well the forecast is for a cloudy day tomorrow... and the satpic doesn't look promising for no cloud cover!
As for my choice in telescope? I would just like a Star-watcher Dobsonian 12" (12" is the sweet spot in aperture for a good light bucket) with a Goto on it and a good range of viewing lenses (plus a decent Barlow). But given that we're now in the territory of cold nights with lots of dew... I don't like your chances of keeping mirrors free of moisture! Might have to invest in some decent heating coils?

And it changes. Looks like western Gascogne & Pilbara could get some good totals for Tues & Wed. Same for down here. Looking forward to an all day rain day soon lol
