Talking points from Neil Bennett

Heavy rainfall event Pilbara/Gascoyne May 4th - 6th

POTENTIAL FOR HEAVY RAIN OVER NORTHWEST PARTS OF WA FROM SUNDAY.

• The Bureau is closely monitoring a developing low pressure system and rain band which is approaching the north-western parts of Western Australia.
• These weather systems may produce heavy rainfall and local flooding over the western Pilbara and western Gascoyne from Sunday to Tuesday.
• Forecast rainfall over a 24 hour period of between 50 and 100mm are expected, and there is the potential for some isolated heavier falls in excess of 150mm.
• In some places, total rainfall for the event may exceed 200mm.
• It is possible that the towns of Exmouth, Coral Bay, Onslow, Cape Cuvier and Denham may be affected.
• The area of heavy rainfall may extend further southwards to near Kalbarri and Geraldton from late on Sunday.
• As the low approaches the coast, strong and gusty winds are expected in coastal areas from Exmouth to Geraldton.
• This weather is not typical for this time of year and heavy rainfall may cause damage to property and make road conditions hazardous.
• This event follows the heavy rain event on Saturday 26 April where 206mm of rain was recorded at Exmouth and 154mm at Learmonth Airport in the 24 hours to 9am 27 April.

• Historical information;
o Learmonth wettest May day 90.4mm 20 May 1984
o Learmonth wettest day ever 254.0mm 23 March 1953
o Exmouth wettest May day 137.8mm 20 May 1984
o Exmouth wettest day ever 304.6mm 4 June 2002

I have decided not to go to Exmouth next week. I wasn't going any way.

The weather next Thursday is looking to be quite nice with lots of rain possible.

Wish I hadn't seen that pic. Why more rain here ? We've had our yearly rain bring on El Nino. The parks are lakes, 20mm causes surface flooding on sand as the ground is saturated.
More mosquitoes etc etc. The guy around the corner pumped out some water that was pooling under a drain , the next day the water was back again rose out of ground again

Rain in Perth not here please . Make it like 2005 rain for Perth again 200mm plus for May.
Yeppoon Annual Average Rainfall is (BOM) = 982.5mm

Latest forecast maps are indicating a deep low and associated Cold Front for Thursday. I do hope Perth and the rest of the SWLD gets a good drop from the system.

The forecasting staff at BoM (pictured below)
Image
...have issued a bit of a warning for poo weather in the Gascoyne:
IDW28001

Severe Weather Warning
for heavy rain and abnormally high tides
for people in the Pilbara and Gascoyne forecast districts
Issued at 11:14 am WST on Sunday 4 May 2014.
For people in parts of WA bounded by Onslow to Pannawonica to Gascoyne Junction to Kalbarri to Denham to Cape Cuvier to Exmouth. This includes people in, near or between the following towns: Onslow, Barrow Island, Exmouth, Coral Bay, Cape Cuvier, Carnarvon, Denham and Kalbarri.

Weather Situation
A developing low and rain band are approaching north western parts of WA.

This weather system is expected to produce HEAVY RAINFALL that may cause FLASH FLOODING in coastal and adjacent inland parts between Onslow and Kalbarri from Sunday evening, contracting to coastal and adjacent inland parts between Onslow and Coral Bay during Monday.

HIGHER THAN NORMAL TIDES may cause FLOODING OF LOW-LYING COASTAL AREAS between Onslow and Denham.

This weather is not typical for this time of year and heavy rainfall may cause damage to property and make road conditions hazardous.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:

If outside find safe shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams.
Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows.
Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones if there is lightning.
If there is flooding, create your own sandbags by using pillow cases filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home.
If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water.
Do not drive into water of unknown depth and current.
Slow down and turn your headlights on.
Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power lines and loose debris.
If it is raining heavily and you can not see, pull over and park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears.
If your home or property has significant damage, like a badly damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500.

The next warning will be issued by 5:00 pm WST Sunday.
This warning is also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's web site at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 213.

The Bureau and Department of Fire and Emergency Services would appreciate this warning being broadcast regularly.
