Could always use 'Birak' January (Aboriginal word for hot months of Dec-Jan).

We used to put the Aboriginal season name with the monthly titles. Haven't done it for a while though.

Most rain today was 42.8mm at Eucla
Forrest, Balladonia and Kal had about 25mm give or take a few.

Wow Forrest had 49.8 in 79. Used live there when I was a little nipper! Amazing joint. Bit desolate though :-)

Good choice for naming Jan too!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting Paul Pichugin in town and we headed out towards Nanarup to do a sunset shoot :) Here's one of my shots.

Awesome shot!
Nicely composed. Has the rock in the foreground got seaweed growing on it?

That was a lens flare because I was pointing directly into the sun. But it worked really well the way I framed it :) Cheers, quite happy with how it turned out.

The is quite a lot of bushfire smoke affecting Marangaroo. There is distinct smokiness to the air at ground level and a plume is drifting overhead.

I can't get into the DFES website so I don't know the details.

Smoke alert for Walpole to Geraldton - 05 January 2014

Published: Sunday, 05 January 2014 07:04

The following information has been issued by the Department of Parks and Wildlife

The Department of Parks and Wildlife has issued a smoke alert for areas from Walpole to Geraldton and inland to Toodyay and Mount Barker. The smoke is from a bushfire that started in Mount Roe National Park, approximately 28km north-west of Denmark, on Friday.

The smoke is expected to clear tomorrow morning, Monday 6 January.

If the smoke is particularly thick, it is recommended people shut doors and windows and turn off air-conditioners.

People with asthma and pre-existing respiratory, cardiovascular illnesses or diabetes should follow their pre-prepared treatment plan.

Smoke may reduce visibility on some roads and motorists should take care, turn on headlights and travel at appropriate speeds when travelling in these areas.

People with conditions exacerbated by smoke should take precautions in line with their medical advice for these circumstances.

I think the smoke caught everyone by surprise this morning. I was quickly jolted awake this morning with the smokey smell around 6.30am and I checked the DFES site for a warning but nothing was there, but when I checked again around 7.30am there was all sorts of warnings out. I couldn't hear any helitaks nearby so I guessed it must be further afield, but it was still a worry until I saw where the source was.

Got a nice salmon filet up on the clothes line just in time this morning. Smoked to perfection by 12pm.

Remember to file this in the memory as a riposte to those who say BOM always get it wrong.
