TROPICAL CYCLONE ADVICE NUMBER 15
Issued at 2:51 pm WST on Wednesday 23 January 2013
A Cyclone WARNING continues for coastal areas from Port Hedland to Dampier,
including Karratha.
The Cyclone WARNING between Dampier and Mardie has been cancelled.
At 2:00 pm WST Tropical Cyclone Peta, Category 1 was estimated to be
50 kilometres east northeast of Karratha and
140 kilometres west southwest of Port Hedland and
moving southwest at 12 kilometres per hour.
Tropical Cyclone Peta is crossing the Pilbara coast just to the east of Point
Samson. Gales with gusts to 100 kilometres per hour are expected close to the
cyclone centre over the next few hours.
Squally thunderstorms are expected. Locally heavy rainfall is possible, and a
Flood Watch has been issued for the Pilbara.
The system is expected to weaken this evening after it crosses the coast.
Although the remnants of Peta may move back off the west Pilbara coast later in
the week, it is not expected to redevelop into a tropical cyclone.
DFES State Emergency Service (SES) advises of the following community alerts:
BLUE ALERT: People in or near coastal and island communities between Port
Hedland and Dampier including Whim Creek, Roebourne, Wickham, Point Samson,
Karratha and Dampier need to prepare for cyclonic weather and organise an
emergency kit including first aid kit, torch, portable radio, spare batteries,
food and water.
ALL CLEAR WITH CAUTION: People in Port Hedland, South Hedland and Mardie are
advised that wind dangers have passed but you need to take care to avoid the
dangers caused by damage.
