Perth Hail Storm - 22nd March 2010

Postby Tim S » Tue Mar 23, 2010 3:35 pm

Thought I would start a topic to include some model outlooks and radar grabs from this storm as I am sure we'll want these in the future:

Radar from when majority of the 4-6cm hail fell on the Western and Northwestern suburbs:

Interesting to compare these images to the one from the Melbourne Hailstorm a few weeks back where similar size hail fell, they had dark red and black on the radar whereas ours only had orange!

These images from bsch.au.com, GFS forecast LIs released at 06z on the 21st March 2010:

CAPE (Ithought these two charts looked good when I saw them on Sunday night! )

Definitely one of, if not the best forecast soundings, I have seen for Perth:

Actual sounding plotted for the 22nd using 32C, 18C DP (roughly the max temp and max dp up to an hour before the storm)

Tim, I've got to say you called this, if I recall correctly, on Sunday. Well done and thanks for your goodbye present!

sssshhhh Simon! It wasn't a goodbye present from me, please no one ring me claiming I owe them a new car or a window or roof tile or 20!

Can't really take credit for calling it, all I saw was a prediction for an epic storm day and called it as the models predicted it. There's no way I ever imagined we'd get hailstones up to around 6cm and the amount of damage we got from it. Although I must have subliminally knew it was coming as I organised it so I had to be home by 4pm and not in Applecross like I would normally be! where if I was there my car would have most likely got damaged like other cars I normally park next too.

In fact I would lay money that the "New Radome" looks very similar to the old Sydney one recently replaced ;) I wonder what other hand me downs we get? We really need a better radar setup in the wheatbelt and coverage behind Albany.

I agree. I wish they'd stick a Bunbury radar on their map.

Looked fairly real to me, I once had a close positive strike when I was hiding under a steel trailer and all I can remember is everything going pink and a massive crack. Also could be a bit of reflection off the camera. But the internet has made us all experts or so we think  ; and also with photoshop ect these days we seem to question everything but, still plausable :?

This one of those the videos that you thought came from here is an ex-Victorian boy, now working as a BOM Observer in Perth and doing leave relief around the state (and likely to become my chase partner in the future lol). His name is Brayden, I will try and convince him to spend more time on this forum. I was nowcasting/forecasting for him on the day, so was very happy he got a nice capture.
