Currently flying between Karijini and Newman. A lot of moisture around the place. Looks awesome from the air.
Noticed a brand spanking new AWS at Karijini NP. It is located about 500m south of the airstrip. Should provide some great readings when it is finally up and running. Will post a pic soon of it.
Very nice to be up here while some weather is about.

I am sure you will. A fair amount around the place. Most of it seems to be to the west of us (NEWMAN), but as im writing this, it just started again here.

Pretty solid rain here for the last 15mins. Getting stronger falls for 10secs or so, then lightens up a bit. Newman has recorded about 4mm for today, and I think we just had about 4mm in the last 30mins or so. Well that is what it felt like.
Interesting Pilbara weather.

Looming warm spell may break records:

http://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/loom ... ords/22325

Tuesday August 28, 2012

The Bureau of Meteorology is warning this week's warm weather is just the start of what will be a long and hot build-up to the wet season.

The bureau's three-month forecast predicts higher-than-usual daytime temperatures for most of the Kimberley.

In the Pilbara, daytime temperatures should stay close to average but there is a 70 per cent chance of above-average maximums at night.

Forecaster Patrick Ward says this week will kickstart the heatwave and could put the month of August in the record books.

"Over the next few days we're looking at temperatures in the high 30s and that's close to records at most sites for August and during the winter," he said.

"So yes, a particularly warm few days ahead and possible a few sites could break a record."

Winter-like day in WA's Newman and Wittenoom:

http://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/wint ... noom/22395

Rob Sharpe, Sunday September 9, 2012

The Pilbara is having a cold start to spring after a hot end to winter.

Yesterday was strangely cold in Newman where the inland Pilbara town had its third coldest day of the year. Cloud from a low pressure trough held the temperature down to 18 degrees in a month where the average day tops out at 30 degrees. During the afternoon storms developed and brought a burst of rain to the area.

Wittenoom also had a cooler day with a top of only 24 degrees, a day typical of June or July.

This cold day has come as a shock to the locals who only recently basked under one of the hottest Augusts on record.

Wittenoom had an average temperature of 31 degrees in August, four above average. This was its hottest August in 58 years of records.

Every Pilbara weather station that isn't on an island recorded more than 1.5 degrees above the August average with many recording their warmest August on record.

So far in September only a handful of areas have a warmer average than in August. Pardoo is the only location that has a running average higher than the long term September average.

On Sunday and most of next week, above average temperatures are favoured with stunning sunny days.

Karratha's hottest day of the year:

http://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/karr ... year/22819

Rob Sharpe, Thursday November 15, 2012

Heat has been sitting over Western Australia's Pilbara for many days, but a morning land breeze has helped Karratha to its hottest November day in five years.

Yesterday was Karratha's hottest day since February, reaching 40 degrees. Today, southerly winds held out the sea breeze until 11am due to a low pressure trough, allowing the mercury to reach 43.6 degrees. This southerly wind is what has helped Karratha get so hot today. Elsewhere in the Pilbara, the inland town of Paraburdoo has hit 42 degrees the last two days and is likely to reach 41 degrees today.

Northern New South Wales and southern Queensland are also sweltering, with Moree and Inverell reaching their highest temperature in 365 days. In Queensland there is a fire weather warning for many districts due to hot temperatures, dry conditions and fresh-to-strong winds.

Pilbara's hottest day of the year:

http://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/pilb ... year/22819

Rob Sharpe, Thursday November 15, 2012

Heat has been sitting over Western Australia's Pilbara for many days, but a morning land breeze has helped the temperature reach the mid forties today, the hottest day of the year so far in Roebourne and Karratha.

It got as hot as 45.9 degrees at Roebourne airport, seven degrees above average. This was its hottest day since it hot 49 dgerees in December last year.

Karratha had its hottest November day in five years, reaching 43.6 degrees, nine above average.

Less than 200km east along the coast, Port Hedland only got to 34 degrees due to a northerly sea breeze all day.

A small low pressure system just off the coast drover the cooler northerly sea breezes to Port Hedland but directed hot southerly winds off the desert to Roebourne and Karratha.

This wasn't the only part of the country to experience its hottest day of the year.

Northern New South Wales and southern Queensland are also sweltering, with Moree and Inverell recaording their highest temperature in 365 days. In Queensland there is a fire weather warning for many districts due to hot temperatures, dry conditions and fresh-to-strong winds. It got to 43 degrees in Birdsville.

for the Pilbara forecast district

Issued at 6:55 pm WST on Friday 16 November 2012.

For people in northeastern parts of the Pilbara, north of Telfer and Marble Bar and east of De Grey.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds in northeastern parts of the Pilbara forecast district. Conditions should ease later this evening.

An organised squall line is moving across the northeastern Pilbara and can be seen on the Port Hedland radar. A wind gust of 115 km/hr was observed at Telfer at 6:37pm.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:

Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows.
Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones if there is lightning.
If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water.
Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power lines and loose debris.

The next warning will be issued by 10:00 pm WST Friday.
