It appears to have snowed down to 40m down in hobart and many major roads are closed.

this is the thread on the tassie forums if you want to follow the story.

Ouch that is cold Monsoonal Maiden

I wonder how many pipes froze last night. It was 0C at about 350m so I am sure pipes froze higher than that.

 that's how rain used to be here, how do you handle the temps mike, from what we see on TV your weather is for 11 months what we get for 2. Here it is about 14 max and already 3 frosts with the lowest min of -.5c, you appear to get that constantly, I come from Morawa (inland from Geraldton) and in 17 years saw 1 mild frost and lowest min was about 1, once, winter temps lasted about 2 weeks then back to the 20's, after 8 years here I still can't handle winter. I intend going to Tassie for a holiday though as everyone I know that has been reckon it is great, and just like a big country town full of friendly people, and Rainbow Trout my second love (Tim may get to meet my trout shortly  ), What is the best time of year to go, I would suspect Jan - Feb

PK

the temperature average here in june is about 9 or 10C today was a sunny day and a northerly and it got to 9.4C

at night is varies between -4C and 5C in winter.

Summer and late summer are glorious times here with warm temperatures (not hot) and long sunlight days.

the best time to travel would be in late Feb and March. This avoids the tourists and the weather is really nice at this time of year. Still have long days and not as much chance of unexpected snowfalls :)

It snows at any time of the year here but it is pretty unlikely in late Feb early March.

If you do travel Tassie do drop by and stay for a night or 2. We have a spare room and we live in a part of paradise.

That offer also goes to any other members making the trip across the Tasman.

http://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/tasm ... rain/13911

The island state of Tasmania is trembling as an intense low pressure cuts its way across the south, driving in icy rain and severe gales, according to weatherzone.com.au.

The low has been causing widespread rain over western and southern Tasmania. Strahan Airport has recorded multiple bursts of around five millimetres in ten minutes, enough to cause flash flooding.

Coastal locations, such as Cape Grim and Low Head, have been continually buffeted by winds with speeds up to 70 km/h. Cape Grim has even been hit by a 91 km/h wind gust, enough to start ripping roofs of houses, if there were any there.

There is currently a Road Weather Alert for all Tasmania roads as rain is expected to significantly reduce visibility, making driving very dangerous. By tomorrow morning, the area most susceptible will have contracted to the Lower Derwent as the low heads east.

On Tuesday, Hobart is expected to get its fair share of rain and gales. Winds will be southerly, acting to really force in the Antarctic air that usually sits further south. As a result, Hobart is set to peak at just 17 degrees, the frost-iest day since mid-December.

Tasmania: a practice for the winter ahead
Sam Terry, Tuesday February 23, 2010 - 16:37 EDT
Weather in Tasmania seems to be practicing for the upcoming winter as icy winds and rain dominated the last 24 hours.

A low pressure cell crossed the southern half of the state overnight, driving in gale-force winds. The strongest wind gust was over Mt Wellington, clocking a speed of 124 km/h. Mattsuyker Island was hit by a 115 km/h gust, the strongest in two months.

Rain has also been a player. Strahan, nestled in the Tasmanian west coast, recorded 31 millimetres to 9am, the wettest it's been in eight
months. Generally across the region, though, it was the wettest in two months.

The rain and wind combined their efforts to bring the coldest night in three weeks to parts of the Lower Derwent district, in some cases the coldest in a month.

The chill lingered into the day even though wind eased and rain cleared. Mt Wellington dropped to just nine degrees, five below the norm and the iciest day in a month. Hobart shivered to 19 degrees.

Tomorrow will see a return to sunny skies and lighter winds for the island state, with Hobart forecast to reach 21 and Launceston a toasty 25. However, cardigans shouldn't be put away just yet as tonight will be a chilly one again.

Gee it is warmer than usual in Hobart, 22 sounds high in the middle of April. I think it usually is around 17 deg in April.
