Clean-up continues after near-record rainfall
Monday January 14, 2008 - 12:33 EDT
Just a week after Cyclone Helen, the Top End is cleaning up from another bout of extreme weather.

More than 240 millimetres was recorded at Darwin Airport in the 24 hour period ending on Sunday morning, the Territory's fifth highest daily rainfall since records began.

The heavy rainfall and flooding caught many by surprise, including the Northern Territory police.

"It was something that wasn't expected," says senior sergeant Chris Lyndon.

"The last report that I can remember from the Met Bureau were that the monsoonal trough wasn't due to come back until February, but here we were with some storm activity that hovered over Darwin and didn't move and dumped more rain than we expected."

Police received nearly 20 emergency calls as the rains:flooded houses along Bagot Road in Ludmilla, including one that reported having two feet of water inside;cut off many of the city's major roads and left cars underwater; and damaged businesses in Winnellie, Fannie Bay and Darwin's northern suburbs.

The Territory Insurance Office says it expects the insurance bill for the floods to top $100,000.

TIO general manager Les Holden says many buildings failed to stand up to the unexpected deluge.

"A lot of the damage has been inundation over floor levels with excess rain, with gutters unable to cop with the excess rain we had."

Mr Lyndon expects insurance companies to be inundated with calls this morning.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the weather is expected to calm down during the first half of this week, though more wet and wild weather is expected in the next few weeks.

Yes, I was listening to 'Australia All Over" yesterday (not a normal occurance, I hasten to assure you) and heard an NT Police request for people to stay off the roads in Darwin for the next 2 hours due to flooding and risk. Not something yo hear every day. It seems to have escaped the mainstream media's attention though.

This is an email from a friend who was transiting Darwin on the weekend:

We had a nice time in Darwin yesterday but got no sleep because there was such a bad thunder storm. It felt like the thunder was in our room as well as the lightning. Scary....

They're from Kununurra, so must have been a good storm!
